The beginnings of traditional Russian fashion

The Orthodox “Russian Beginnings” study center has worked to study and reconstruct traditional Russian dress for the past 12 years.

Each year, the studio’s participants go on ethnographic expeditions to different regions of Russia to study and, subsequently, recreate unique embroidery techniques and the minutest details of traditional women’s, men’s, and children’s costumes. The organization creates costumes from the Arkhangelsk, Olonets, Vologda, and Kostroma regions, the center and south of Russia (Moscow, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Smolensk, Orlov, Tula, and Ryazan regions), as well as those of South Altai. Almost all of the costumes are hand-stitched, using old technology and techniques to create them.
